You’ve tasted sweet and sour chicken at the takeaway, but you can make it far better at home and it’s much healthier! This Sweet and Sour Chicken combines crispy chicken with chunks of onion, bell pepper and pineapple in a sticky homemade sauce. Serve it in rice bowls for a quick weeknight dinner.



  • 1 pound boneless skinless chicken thighscut into 1-inch pieces, or chicken breasts
  •  teaspoon salt
  • 1/2  cup cornstarch
  • 1 1/2  cups flour
  •  eggbeaten
  •  tablespoon oilcanola oil or similar
  • 1 ¼  cups water
  • vegetable oilfor frying


  • 1 red bell pepper cut into 1″ pieces
  •  green bell pepper cut into 1″ pieces
  •  medium yellow onion cut into 1″ pieces
  •  tablespoon oilcanola oil or similar
  •  cup pineapple chunksfresh, or canned/frozen

Sweet and Sour Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • ¼  cup rice vinegar or white vinegar
  •  teaspoon garlicminced, or garlic powder
  •  tablespoons soy sauce low sodium recommended
  • 1/4  cup ketchup
  •  tablespoons cornstarchmixed with 2 tablespoons water
  • sesame seedsoptional garnish
